Jacobs Takes The Biscuit As Dons Lose

Wimbledon slumped to a 3-0 home defeat against lowly Northampton Town on Tuesday (13 September), despite playing half the game against ten men.
Northampton were already 1-0 up when, on the stroke of half-time, their ex-Milton Keynes midfielder Nick McKoy was sent off for a two-footed lunge at Sammy Moore.
But the Dons were unable to make their numerical advantage tell and found themselves further adrift after a quickfire brace from Michael Jacobs sealed the win for the visitors.
It had started promisingly for the Dons as, despite some Northampton chances up the other end, they mounted early pressure, with Kieran Djilali's pace and skill on the ball promising much.
But their efforts were undone on the quarter hour when goalkeeper Seb Brown was adjudged to have brought down Marlon Jackson in the box. Brown claimed that he had punched the ball away before making contact with Jackson, but his only reward was a yellow card and to be beaten from the spot by Adebayo Akinfenwa.
That goal lifted the visitors, with Akinfenwa going close to his second when he forced a good close-range save from Brown. And from the resultant corner the bulky former Gillingham striker was again in the action, out-muscling Jamie Stuart to power a header against the crossbar.
McKoy's senseless lunge gave the Dons renewed hope, but more often than not their patient attempts to pass their way to an opening came to nothing. Substitute Christian Jolley's pace caused the visitors some problems, but failed to ignite the game for the Dons.
And their hopes were over when with Jacob's quickfire double with quarter of an hour remaining. The pitch had been heavily watered at half-time and Jacob's first came when his long-range shot squirmed through Brown's grasp and into the back of the net.
Minutes later, his second and Northampton's third came after he dispossessed Lee Minshull and charged forward unchallenged before slotting home at Brown's near post.
The Dons kept pressing, more in hope than expectation, with Charles Ademeno having an effort saved by Sam Walker, but the final whistle came with little real opportunity to grab a consolation.
Afterwards, manager Terry Brown told the club's official website: "The result was horrific, but I thought the manner in which we conceded the goals was [something] of a one-off and some of our approach play and play in general was as good as we have played this season."
The Dons are back in league action when they host Cheltenham Town on Saturday (17 September).
