Wombles Slump To Macclesfield Defeat

Macclesfield 4 v Wimbledon 0

Wimbledon were brought down to earth with a bump as they capitulated 4-0 at Macclesfield on Saturday (27 August).

Two successive away wins at the start of the Dons' return to the Football League had given the travelling fans optimism as they made the trek north.

But it took just three minutes for the Dons' defensive frailties to hand a lead to the home side, as a long throw was flicked on by Elliott Hewitt and Shaun Brisley capitalised on a static defence to score past Seb Brown.

And midway through the half the home side scored again as Emile Sinclair outpaced Brett Johnson down the right flank and his looping cross was headed home by Tony Diagne, who wasn't put off by Sam Hatton's ineffective challenge.

Any hopes the Dons might have had of salvaging the game in the second half evaporated just three minutes in when Sinclair charged down the inside left channel, cut inside and evaded Jamie Stuart's half-hearted challenge before slotting embarrassing Brown at his near post.

And, after the home side's substitute Ben Tomlinson hit the bar with a long-range effort, the route was complete late on when Stuart was dispossessed by Arnaud Mendy in the centre circle and the Macclesfield man charged forward before slotting home past Brown.

The Dons rarely threatened in what was a collective "bad day at the office", although they did see one late effort cleared off the line following a Hatton corner.

Afterwards, manager Terry Brown told the club's website: "Every so often you have to have a reality check and I think there was certainly one on Saturday.

"I do believe that this season the results will fluctuate between good and bad and it is how the team responds to setbacks that will determine how successful our season is."

He will be hoping that they start when they host Port Vale on Saturday (3 September) before travelling to Aldershot Town the following weekend in a game that is all ticket for Wimbledon supporters.
