Wimbledon Stables Open Their Doors

Annual tug o' war adds to the fun

Wimbledon Common Stables are holding their annual open day on Sunday September 4.

The fun starts at the stables in Windmill Road from 10.30am and includes farm animals, birds of prey, tractor rides and a "wacky dog show".

There will also be a mascot race - the Fur and Feather Obstacle Stakes - organised by AFC Wimbledon's Haydon the Womble, and featuring up to 20 other mascots.

And from 1pm onwards, the event will also host the annual charity Tug o' War organised by the Merton Village Safer Neighbourhood Police Team (SNT).

More than a dozen teams took part last year and it raised more than £2,000 for the Help the Heroes charity.

This year they are raising funds for Hounds For Heroes, a charity which aims to provide specially trained assistance dogs to injured and disabled men and women of both the UK armed forces and civilian emergency services.

Sergeant Adrian Sutherland, of the Village SNT, said: "This is a great annual family event, which this year will hopefully raise funds for a very deserving charity. We look forward to meeting lots of supporters to come and cheer for our Tug of War team, or come and take part themselves".
