Catch A Mascot If You Can

Wimbledon Common is charity race venue

Visitors to Wimbledon Common may have a bit of a surprise if they stumble across the inaugural AFC Wimbledon Community Mascot Race!

Mascots of all shapes and sizes will be running through the undergrowth, scrambling over straw-bales and sprinting for the finish line in the hope of lifting the WUP Cup, sponsored by the Womble Underground Press.

The race takes place by Wimbledon Windmill at 3pm on Sunday September 4, as part of the Wimbledon Stables Open Day.

AFC Wimbledon’s furry mascot Haydon the Womble sent out invitations to a number of his mascot friends to help the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Rangers raise funds for the charity Hounds for Heroes.

He said: "I thought a mascot obstacle race would be just the ticket – I get to meet up with all my old friends, to practice my hurdles before the Olympics and to help the Rangers raise money for a good cause!"

Haydon also hopes that home knowledge will give him an edge.

He said: "Of course having grown up here I know the Common very well and I hope the crowd will get behind me as well. It’s going to be a lot of fun!"

Haydon will be joined by a number of other mascots including Howie the Hornet from Horsham FC, Sutton United's Jenny Giraffe, local favourite Debra the Zebra from Merton's Road Safety Team, world famous Pudsey Bear representing BBC's Children in Need, Dr Dudley is flying in from the Surrey Air Ambulance, Dazzler the Dragon Medway's rugby-playing dragon and Bumper and Squeak, two mice from the Hollywood Bowl in Tolworth. Red-hot favourite though is Jimmy Spices Mr Spice, a chilli-pepper with attitude!
