The Queen Is Due To Attend Wimbledon

Making her first visit to the Championships in 33 years

The Queen is due to visit the Wimbledon tennis tournament for the first time since Virginia Wade's triumph back in 1977.

She will sit in the Royal Box of the the All England Tennis Club on June 24, regardless of the success or failure of any British players.   Last year she was expected to attend the event if Andy Murray had reached the final, and had earlier sent him a message of congratulations for winning at the Queen's Tournament. But Murray was beaten in the semi-final by Andy Roddick.

She last visited Wimbledon when she presented Virginia Wade with the ladies' trophy - the last time a British player won a singles championship.
