See The Y:Cube Housing Prototype

Innovative Y:Cube goes on show in Wimbledon

There's a chance for Wimbledon residents to visit the Y:Cube – an innovative solution to the housing crisis.

The prototype Y:Cube will be open for the public to inspect for themselves from 10am-2pm on Thursday April 3 at the YMCA in The Broadway, Wimbledon.

The Y:Cube, designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners (RSH+P), is aimed at providing self-contained and affordable starter accommodation for young people unable to either gain a first step on the housing ladder or pay the high costs of private rent.

Andy Redfearn, YMCA LSW's Director of Development will be available at the event to any ask questions visitors have about the prototype, future plans for the project and the planned Y:Cube housing scheme in Mitcham. There's no need to book a visit - just turn up.

He said: "I hope that many local Merton and London South West residents will be heading to the YMCA in Wimbledon on Thursday 3rd April. The Y:Cube Prototype is located just outside the Tower Lodge and has already attracted a lot of attention from curious by passers, the media and interested parties.

"We at YMCA LSW are very proud to have a fully liveable prototype on hand to exhibit and we are curious and excited to find out what the wider public thinks about it.

"Moreover, I think many people will be up for a surprise when they step over the doorstep and see the modern and functional design, the bright colours and spacious atmosphere that our partner architects RSH+P have managed to create within the 26m2 apartment.

"Anyone wanting to have a look and a chat about the Y:Cube are very welcome to stop by on Thursday – I will be there to answer any questions and to show people around!"

It is hoped that the first Y:Cube Housing scheme could open in Merton by the end of 2014, providing 36 homes for local people in housing need.

The planned scheme will be for single people who are former YMCA LSW residents and also offer homes to single people on the local council’s waiting list The one-bedroom homes will be let at 65 per cent of the market rent, which currently  in Merton, is  £140 a week.
