Work Continues On Wimbledon Windmill

Do you have time to help out at popular local attraction?

Volunteers and trustees of Wimbledon Windmill have been busy after one of its sails broke off last year.

The other sails were then removed for safety as the structure on Wimbledon Common was then out of balance.

Behind the scenes, the volunteers and trustees of the mill, as well as the Commons Conservators, have been very active and soon visitors will see the beginning of the restoration works.

Volunteers at the mill visited the workshops of the millwrights earlier this week to see the progress on the repairs and were fascinated to see the complex activity involved (see picture on the right).

They expect the sails to go back up in early autumn.

In the meantime they are open for business as usual on Saturday afternoon from 2pm-5pm and Sunday from 11am-5pm.

The windmill museum is entirely run by volunteers, and it really need some more support from the community either to help run the museum at the weekends or to help out with occasional family activity days or to help develop and run their education programme.

Could you spare a few hours from time to time? If so, get in touch with the team via the contact form on the website www.wimbledonwindmill.org.uk or contact Linda on 07989-218583.
