Be The First On The Wimbledon Way

New heritage walk is set to open

You can be among the first to walk The Wimbledon Way - a new heritage walk for the town - at a special event on Saturday.

Living Streets and Merton Chamber of Commerce will be celebrating improvements to the streets and spaces in Wimbledon and highlighting The Wimbledon Way.

The event will run between 11am and 4pm on Saturday (May 26), starting at the Piazza in Wimbledon town centre.

Maps will be given out to guide walkers along a 2.012km heritage trail through Wimbledon town centre, up to Wimbledon Village and on to the All England Lawn Tennis Club and Wimbledon Tennis Museum.

All walkers will receive prizes for completing the walk, which will include a poster of the 2012 Tennis Championships and a discount for entry to the Tennis Museum on the day.

The Wimbledon Way is being funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund to bring the story of Wimbledon's heritage alive and to involve young people, schools, communities and businesses in learning about and participating in their local heritage. The Wimbledon Way will also provide a new tourist attraction for visitors to Wimbledon.

Andrew Wakefield, chair of Merton Chamber of Commerce, said: "I believe this is a fantastic project that will not only provide stronger physical links between the town centre, the Village and The All England Lawn Tennis Club, but also cement the links between all those that have an interest in making Wimbledon a great place to live, work and do business.
