Dons Lose Against Team Aiming For Promotion

Wimbledon RFC 1XV 3 v Chichester 51

The last time that this writer wrote the match report was just eight weeks ago for the victory against Thanet Wanderers.   On Saturday only six of that team started the latest match in this long and frustrating season, and only eight from the squad that played Tonbridge Juddians three weeks ago remain.

The dogged and determined team that played the previous Saturday away at Portsmouth sustained three more injuries to Julian Callanan, Graeme Symon and Leon Driscoll, the result was an even deeper dig into the Club’s reserves this week to even field a side.

Understandably some fitness levels were far below those needed to compete at this level against a team who are starting to sniff a possible promotion and were in no mood to let up in their efforts to score.

On the day Wimbledon's heroes were Ben Davies, Ben Morgan and Matt Lambert in the forwards and Elroy Cupido, Jonny Rawlinson and Elliott Rowe in the backs, praise should also go to centre Richard Finch making his debut, let’s hope he gets some ball to use next time.

The other eleven who played did their level best and nobody doubts their will to succeed but against a capable team like Chichester it was sadly not enough.

Their frustration is shared by the coaches Nathan Kemp and James Ogilvie-Bull who know that Wimbledon have a very capable team themselves, if only they could all get out on the pitch for a few matches together.

On Saturday (February 12) Wimbledon 1st XV will be away to Dover with a 2.30pm kick-off.
