Wimbledon School Extensions Complete For Term

Extension work still underway at Dundonald School

Major expansion works across Merton primary schools this summer, including a number in and around Wimbledon, have been completed in time for the return of pupils starting the new autumn term.

Some of the works undertaken include new extension buildings at Wimbledon's Pelham and Merton Abbey schools as well as Hillcross in Morden.

Adaptations have also taken place to allow Dundonald Primary School to provide an extra class while the permanent extension works are undertaken.

Fifteen other schools have benefitted from maintenance works the council has commissioned, including new boilers and roof replacements.

Merton's cabinet member for education, Councillor Martin Whelton, said: "Our £80 million expansion programme means that we are able to offer more children a place at a local school as we live up to our commitment to providing 2,000 more school places over the next four years. As these children move through primary school, we are working on how best to meet the inevitable increased demand for secondary school places in the future."

The council has already said a new secondary school could be created somewhere in South Wimbledon.
