Merton Remembers In November
Services to take place across the borough
The men and women of the Armed Forces will be honoured with a series of remembrance services across Merton.
On Friday November 11 and Sunday November 13, numerous acts of Remembrance will take place across the borough, including:
November 11: Morden and Mitcham
The Service of Remembrance will start at 10.50am at the Civic Centre in London Road, Morden and at 10.50am at the Clock Tower on Fair Green, Mitcham.
November 13: Wimbledon War Memorial - Wimbledon Village
The Service of Remembrance will start at 10.40am on Sunday at the Wimbledon War Memorial, Wimbledon Village. In attendance will be The Deputy Mayor of Merton, Councillor Chris Edge, members of the council, civic representatives and members of local organisations. After the service, the Deputy Mayor will take the salute in Wimbledon High Street. Members of the Wimbledon branch of The Royal British Legion will be in attendance.
November 13: Nelson Hospital Forecourt, Kingston Road, Wimbledon Chase
The Service of Remembrance will start at 9.00am on Sunday and will be attended by the Mayor of Merton, Councillor Gilli Lewis-Lavender, members of the council, civic representatives and health groups. Members of the Morden and District branch of The Royal British Legion will be in attendance.
November 13: Mitcham War Memorial - Lower Green West, Mitcham
The Service of Remembrance will start 10.40am on Sunday at the Mitcham War Memorial, at Lower Green West, Mitcham. In attendance will be the Mayor of Merton, Councillor Gilli Lewis-Lavender, members of the council, civic representatives and members of local organisations. The parade will march off at 10.10am from The Royal British Legion Club, St. Mark's Road, Mitcham, to the Mitcham War Memorial. After the service The Deputy Lieutenant, The Rt Hon Sir John Wheeler JP, will take the salute with the Mayor of Merton Councillor Gilli Lewis-Lavender at Lower Green West and the parade will march back to St. Mark's Road. Members of the Mitcham branch of The Royal British Legion will be in attendance.
November 13: All Saints Primary School, Colliers Wood:
The school will be holding a special service at the school at 10.45am on Sunday and welcome the local community. The school is thought to have sent more ex-pupils to fight in World War One than any other in England and holds a remembrance event each year to mark this. The majority of the 174 ex-pupils from the old Haydons Road School died during battle.
Mayor of Merton, Councillor Gilli Lewis-Lavender (left), said: "This day is significant as it serves as a faithful reminder of those who have lost their lives fighting for their country. We remember those fallen and also men and women who are serving in the Armed Forces at present. I hope residents across the borough will remember those at this time and support the 2011 Poppy Appeal for its hard work."
