There was praise for the record number of children from who successfully completed the Summer Reading Challenge at a ceremony in Wimbledon Library this week.
Deputy Mayor of Merton, Councillor John Sargeant, and Councillor Nick Draper congratulated the 6,312 children who entered the Merton-wide competition, a 49% increase from last year.
They were thrilled that 1,757 completed the “Creepy House” themed challenge in record-breaking numbers. The children were presented with certificates and prizes to mark their achievement and there was a special performance by the Polka Theatre which brought theatrical magic to the event.
The Deputy Mayor said: "Reading should be, first and foremost, a source of enjoyment for everyone. But we should recognise the dedication that the children brought to this worthwhile challenge. Congratulations to everyone who took part."
