Roxanne demonstrates her work in front of 70,000 people
Wimbledon student Roxanne El-Hady has been crowned the UK Young Scientist of the Year for 2016 at the The Big Bang Fair.
Roxanne, a pupil at Ricards Lodge Secondary School, had created a project investigating climate change which she entered into the National Science and Engineering Competition
Roxanne was invited to demonstrate her work, alongside other finalists, at The Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers Fair which saw over 70,000 people from across the UK attend the ceremony at the NEC in Birmingham.
With a panel of celebrities and science professionals Roxanne’s project came out victorious. She is pictured (far left) with other winners.
She will now take on the role of an ambassador for science, attending events throughout the year to connect with the Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) industry and to inspire other young people to pursue science.
Roxanne is currently in her final year studying A levels in chemistry, geography and maths at RR6, the joint Sixth Form of Ricards Lodge and Rutlish schools. She is hoping to study earth sciences/geology at Bristol, UCL or Edinburgh University.
Headteacher of Ricards Lodge, Alison Jerrard, said: “I am thrilled for and very proud of Roxanne’s achievement. She has worked extremely hard throughout her 7 years at Ricards and thoroughly deserves this award. I have no doubt that as we watch her move onward to University and into the work place she is going to have a big impact on the STEM industries. She really is a successful woman of the future.”
