New fast food outlet goes to appeal over agreed opening hours
Opening hours advertised on the window of the new McDonald's
Fast food chain McDonald's is understood to have started an appeals process against the refusal of its plans to open on a 24-hour basis in Wimbledon town centre.
Merton Council's licensing sub-committee turned down an application to extend the existing licence for the outlet on The Broadway, opposite Centre Court Shopping Centre and Wimbledon station.
The property, a former Burger King restaurant, did have a Premises Licence from 8am-1am on Monday to Thursday and on Sunday, with an extra hour, until 2am on Friday and Saturday nights.
But, following the meeting on January 18, the application for a 24-hour licence was refused and the agreed hours remained the same as the Burger King operation. In addition, a number of offered and imposed conditions were placed on the Premises Licence.
However, McDonald's has since opened and is advertising its opening hours as 5am - both on the window of the restaurant and on its own app. It is currently offering takeaways and deliveries only, in line with Covid regulations.
Other nearby food business, including Greggs and Pret, have been opening earlier than 8am in the morning for many years.
McDonald's is understood to have lodged an appeal against the January decision with Merton Council. Both Merton Council and McDonald's have been approached for a comment.
