Former Wimbledon House School Set To Be Sold

Preferred bidder is in nursery education

The former Wimbledon House School, closed for many years and occupied by squatters for some time, could be converted into a nursery school.

The building (right), on the corner of Dorest Road and Kingston Road in Merton Park, closed in 2005 and is now owned by Merton Council.

There had been plans by a group, including parents concerned about lack of locally-available primary school places, to set up a "Free School" in the locally-listed building.

But the Free School plans have been turned down by education secretary Michael Gove and the council put the building up for sale.

When the 'for sale' deadline of October 21 passed, 14 offers had been received.

A preferred bidder has since been chosen, and they are involved in nursery education. They will not demolish the existing property.
