Enjoy Bellydancing And More With Wimbledon Guild

Local welfare organisation extends its programme of activities

Social welfare charity Wimbledon Guild has extended its programme of activities following the success of their recently added bellydancing classes.

The charity started the exotic dance classes in January initially only twice a month. But following packed classes and a huge demand for the popular classes, bellydancing will now be held every week at Drake House Hall in Wimbledon.

The new sessions are part of Wimbledon Guild’s Spring Ageing Well programme which has been designed to support the charity’s aim of offering a wide and varied programme of friendly, welcoming events, talks and activities for the over 55s in the community.

This now takes the number of classes offered each month to 120, encompassing everything from Tai Chi to art and exercise classes for those who have suffered a stroke. And there are activities and away-days which take in some of the Capital's finest museums and gardens.

To help support their aim of offering support to as many people in the community as possible, Wimbledon Guild has also begun a new partnership with South Mitcham Community Centre and the United Tamil Elders Association to run Get Up And Go! classes.

The hour-long classes for the over 55s will take place every Monday and Friday at South Mitcham Community Centre and organisers hope that by working together, they will provide a fresh approach to exercise for the over 55s.

The Guild celebrates 110 years of improving the lives of people in Merton during 2017 and is proud of the new partnerships that are being forged across the community.

Emma Aldridge, Head of Welfare at Wimbledon Guild said: "We take the business of helping people seriously but we're also serious that it can be fun too. We want our wide and varied range of activities to people over 55 to meet their personal and emotional goals, improve physical and mental wellbeing and reduce social isolation.  We look forward to welcoming more people, who might be trying one of these activities with us for the very first time.”
