Chance for groups and clubs in Merton to apply for funds from SW19 charity
The Wimbledon Foundation, the charity of the All England Lawn Tennis Club and The Championships, is offering funding of £65,000 to local groups and clubs to help get people active in Merton and Wandsworth.
The Get Set, Get Active Fund, launched in 2016, aims to help people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to take part in physical or sports activities in their community.
Groups and clubs active in the boroughs of Merton and Wandsworth can apply for grants ranging from £500 up to £2,500 towards the costs of direct sports or physical activity provision including equipment and kits, coaching fees and venue hire. Applications are encouraged from groups which tackle social problems and help people facing disadvantages to improve their quality of life.
In 2018, 29 local groups and clubs were awarded grants covering a variety of pursuits from a cycling project for visually-impaired people to chair-based exercise classes for older people. Enable Leisure & Culture were awarded funding to help improve the fitness levels of female pupils aged 12 to 15-years old in Wandsworth secondary schools.
According to Women in Sport, just 8% of girls in the UK meet the recommended levels of physical activity for their age. Enable is trying to address this by encouraging female pupils who do not participate in sport and physical activity to try new activities such as yoga, rugby and Pilates.
Helen Parker, Head of Foundation said, “One of the Wimbledon Foundation’s key goals is to support healthy and active lives. Sport not only improves people’s physical wellbeing, it can help improve people’s mental wellbeing through learning a new skill or making new friends. Through our Get Set, Get Active Fund we want to support the fantastic work being done by local groups and clubs to help improve people’s lives in our local community.”
