Fencing championships yield local success

Two Wimbledon teams fenced in the annual Barwell cup team competition at Rutlish School in Wimbledon on Sunday (October 25).

The Barwell cup has been an annual event since 1952 and is fenced by teams of four comprising one female and one male foilist and épéeist and a sabreur. 

This year there were seven teams, Egham, Streatham, Kingston and two from Guildford vying for first place against the two from Wimbledon.

The Wimbledon team of Monica Sisiu (WF), Tim Buzwell (F), Simon White (S) and Mark Richardson won the cup and the team of Kate Downer (WF), Hilmi Sergen (F) Paweł Żakiewicz (S) and Marco Russo (E) came third.

Individual medals went to Tim Buzwell with five wins, Marco Russo with five wins and Simon White who ended the day unbeaten with six wins.

Earlier in the month, five Wimbledon fencers made it to the last eight on at the individual épée championships in Guildford.

Tim Buzwell won gold during the October 18 event, and Marco Russo bronze, with Simon White fifth, Steve Giddings sixth and Mark Richardson 8th.
