Wimbledon Fencers Triumph In Final Competition Of 2015

Success in Epsom for seven local fencers

Seven fencers from Wimbledon took part in the annual novice and intermediate championships in Epsom College on Sunday (December 6).

Novices are those with up to three years fencing experience and intermediates are men who have not achieved a top two placing in any county or region event or women have not won a regional or county event in that weapon.

Forty-four fencers from the Surrey region took part with five of the entrants competing in two weapons.

In the women's intermediate épée Rachel Carter won gold and in the men's Simon White won silver. Derek Mortimer won the men's épée novice bronze medal. Paweł Żakiewicz won bronze in the men's intermediate sabre and Mark Richardson bronze in the men's intermediate foil, with Wimbledon junior fencers Alexander Landgren winning bronze in the men's novice foil and Morgan Wroe making the last 16 after a spectacular DE win against Surrey University Student Akhil Tomy.

If you'd like to learn to fence and compete in this event next year, Wimbledon fencing Club will be running a beginner's foil course starting on Wednesday February 3. Details on: Adult Beginner Course.
