Real-life rescue is recreated in town centre
Christmas shoppers in Wimbledon were shocked to see firefighters 'rescuing' a driver trapped in the wreckage of a car on the town centre Piazza.
But the incident (below) was the recreation of a real-life accident rescue, aimed at showing how the emergency services work together to save lives.
The exercise, which was carried out by Future Merton Road Safety and the emergency services, was aimed at encouraging road safety.
Road safety campaigners say the cost of a road fatality to society is £1.6m.
