Thieves Pose As Water Board Workers

Burglars steal from an 82-year-old woman

Another Wimbledon pensioner has been the victim of burglars posing as a workmen.

Police in Merton recently warned there had been nine similar burglaries in a six-week period.

In the latest incident, an 82-year-old woman was burgled in Church Road, Wimbledon, at 1.20pm on Monday (May 21).

The suspects are three white men aged between 25-40yrs. One of whom was wearing all green.

They said they were from the water board and there was an emergency with a neighbouring flat. They gained entry and one suspect asked the victim to keep turning the taps on and off while another suspect searched the property and stole cash and jewellery.

Police are putting on extra patrols and Safer neighbourhood teams are visiting homes giving crime prevention advice.

Their advice is:

* ALWAYS ask for photographic ID before letting ANYONE into your home.

* If you are in any doubt at all, refuse entry - legitimate callers will not take offence.

* Never leave any cash or valuables in display in your home.

* If you are ever afraid when someone visits your address, dial 999 immediately.

If you have any information at all, no matter how insignificant it may seem, contact detectives on 0208 649 3159 or dial 101. To give information anonymously, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
