Why Not Take One In Merton?

Businesses encouraged to think young

Do you know a local business which could consider taking on a young person as an apprentice, or even just a work trial?

More than 50 businesses attended the launch of Merton Chamber of Commerce's Take One Campaign to hear more about the benefits of engaging young people in the borough.

The audience at Wimbledon Park Golf Club heard an array of experts on the subject including the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, the National Apprenticeship Service and John Robson, Managing Director of AZTEC Event Services, who provided the local business perspective.

Diana Sterck, Chief Executive of Merton Chamber of Commerce, said: "Take One is a campaign to encourage local businesses to take on a local young person. I would like all local business to consider taking on a young person in a job, as an Apprentice, on a work trial or, perhaps, being a mentor to them.

"The turnout at today's event was fantastic. I am confident that Merton's businesses will play a significant role in supporting the ambitions and futures of our young people."

One of the local businesses who attended the event, and who already supports the Apprenticeship programme, said: "The apprenticeship programme is a win-win situation for us as a business. Our employees are earning a wage and continue learning at the same time. Through this programme they will acquire some valuable skills and gain a recognised qualifications equivalent to five A*-C GCSE qualifications. What a fantastic way to kick-start a career in hospitality! With this programme we continue to build a great team that are skilled and engaged. This in turn drives up the service experience we deliver every day to our customers".

Other business sectors already involved, and benefitting, from this programme include those in the care, events and building services sector.
