A new repertory theatre season due to run in the Studio of New Wimbledon Theatre for four months has been cancelled after a withdrawal of investment.

Studio Rep was planned as a unique collaboration between The New Actors Company, New Wimbledon Theatre and ATG to reinvigorate the artistic identity of Studio at New Wimbledon Theatre.

Six actors were due to appear in four productions - Breathing Corpses, Macbeth, Dresden and The Night Before Christmas - with the first show set to start today (August 27).

But hours before the opening show, an announcement from New Wimbledon Theatre & Studio said: "The New Actors Company regret to announce the cancellation of their #StudioRep Season at the Studio at New Wimbledon Theatre, due to a last minute withdrawal of confirmed investment".

Robert Laycock, Director and Daniel Souter, Producer of The New Actors Company commented: "Our talented company of six actors had worked tirelessly in the rehearsal room on the first play which was in great shape ready for our first preview next week.  But, without all the committed investment in the bank, we felt we were unable to proceed. We are devastated."

Nick Parr, Theatre Director at New Wimbledon Theatre added: "Everyone at the theatre is so disappointed for Rob and Daniel. Ticket sales were strong, the work looked amazing and all the investment seemed secure.  We work in a precarious business and this sad cancellation shows that even with over a year of planning, things can go wrong in the final stages through no fault of the theatre or the producers."
