Police Hunting Wimbledon Village Burglar Make Arrest

Man was taken for questioning at a South London police station

Police investigating a series of burglaries in the Wimbledon Village area dating back to 2006 have made an arrest.

A 38-year-old man was arrested at an address in Wimbledon yesterday (June 5) on suspicion of burglary. He is currently in custody at a south London police station.

This follows an investigation by the Metropolitan Police Service's Trident and Area Crime Command and Merton CID into burglaries in and around Wimbledon Village over a ten-year period.

Merton Police have been hunting a prowler in the area – nicknamed the ‘fisherman’s hat burglar’ for several years.

A Merton police spokesman said: “This is a very significant arrest for Merton and the MPS, and demonstrates great policing and team work between neighbourhood, CID, forensic and specialist teams. We continue to appeal for witnesses and information that may assist our investigation.”
