Events to mark National Libraries Day
Merton Libraries have been holding a range of open days and event taster sessions to mark National Libraries Day.
With taster sessions to suit everyone, new and existing library users will have the opportunity to get involved in the range of activities that libraries hold free of charge on a weekly basis.
National Libraries Day takes place across the UK annually as an occasion to celebrate libraries and librarians, and highlight the importance of reading. It will be marked in Merton with a series of events.
Wimbledon Library is holding a special day on Tuesday February 19. As well as library tours and registration of new members, it plans the following on that day:
10am-1pm Merton Adult Education visit
10am-1pm National Careers Service Advice and booking of appointments
10:30am-12:30pm Poetry workshop (bring your own favourite poems or written piece of work)
11am-2pm Jewellery-making taster session
11am-3pm Italian teacher offering information about his popular Italian classes
1pm-4pm Knitting Class taster session
2pm-3pm Yoga/Pilates teacher will be giving a talk on the benefits of Yoga and overall health and wellbeing.
Merton Council's member for community and culture, Councillor Nick Draper said: "Residents in Merton should really use National Libraries Day this year as a reason to get down to their local library and become a member.
"During this special occasion we should also celebrate that, not only have all our libraries remained open, they are consistently improving their services and are considered to be amongst the best in London through the help of excellent volunteers, committed staff, new technology and events to suit everyone.
"Our libraries are very successful and offer a great service to the local community. If you're not already a member, next week is the time to take a look at what our libraries have to offer, try out the taster sessions and join your local library."
