Wimbledon food project has an input into plans
Abundance Wimbledon is one of the organisations helping develop a food charter for Merton.
The public health team from Merton Borough Council and Sustainable Merton met them and other local partners and organisations to discuss the idea.
The charter will outline a commitment for partners to work together to support Merton residents to eat a healthy diet, encourage local businesses to use sustainable practices, make the healthy option the easy option and strengthen local communities through work on the food environment.
The Mitcham meeting saw those in attendance, including LiveWell and South Thames College, as well as Abundance Wimbledon, discuss what they would like to see in a charter including healthy eating, food waste, sourcing ingredients and local food businesses.
The group also looked at food projects that are currently happening in the borough such as Dig Merton, healthy cooking classes in schools and food waste recycling which are all part of Merton's effort to be a healthy place for all.
Abundance Wimbledon is a project that picks and distributes local fruit that would otherwise go to waste.
Merton’s director of public health, Dr Kay Eilbert said: "It was fantastic to see people from partners with a range of expertise, come together with the council to start work on the charter which will benefit all of Merton. By creating a set of priorities that can be shared by all we hope to encourage partnership working to achieve more for the residents of Merton."
