Celebrate Team GB's Success With A Free Day's Sport

Sports facilities across Merton will open for free this Saturday

Sporting facilities across Merton will be open to the public for free Saturday 27 August to celebrate the success of the UK’s incredible athletes at Rio 2016 and to inspire people to take up a sport of their own.

As part of the national campaign, I am Team GB, residents will be able to try out a number of sports at locations across the borough. The council’s leisure partners, Better, will be throwing open the doors of Merton’s leisure centres, Morden Park Pools, Wimbledon Leisure Centre and the Canons in Mitcham. Wimbledon Park bowls club will be hosting a taster day in the beautiful surroundings of one of the borough’s flagship parks. Mitcham Bowls Club will also be offering free sessions too. Disability tennis and football will be available at Canons and, thanks to the council’s Sportsblast partners, a portable BMX track will be set up there for the day.

Whether it’s football, lawn bowls, circuit training, BMXing, tennis, swimming or netball, there will be something for everyone.

Leader of Merton Council Councillor Stephen Alambritis said: “This has been a fantastic week for the whole country to get behind Team GB and celebrate the dedication and success of our athletes. In Merton we’re pleased to be involved in I Am Team GB and have the added excitement of knowing that we are about to start building the brand new Morden Leisure Centre (MLC), complete with diving facilities. So hopefully we will be seeing some of the future Olympic champions come from there. I’ve always been into football, but even if you’re new to sport, I’d encourage everyone to get involved, get active and give it a go.”
