Honour also goes to Wimbledon's UK ladies' champions

Reigning men's Wimbledon tennis champion, Andy Murray is set to be granted honorary freeman status of Merton.

The decision will be made to honour winner of the men's Wimbledon Tennis Championship 2013, Andy Murray as well as British ladies' champions Virginia Wade (1977), Ann Haydon-Jones (1969) and Angela Mortimer (1961) at the next Merton Borough Council full meeting on April 2.

Once granted, presentation ceremonies planned for the summer will take place where the sporting heroes will formally be given the honour by the Mayor of Merton.

Mayor of Merton, Councillor Krystal Miller, said: "The admission of these great sportspeople as Honorary Freemen of the Borough is the highest honour the council can give.

"We have not added any individuals to this list since 2006 and we are delighted to welcome those who have made significant sporting contributions to Great Britain and whose great achievements took place in the borough."
