A new summer-long art installation designed with the help of local school children has been placed in the centre of Wimbledo.

It is based on the official ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee’ theme under The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) planting initiative and has been commissioned by Love Wimbledon.

To commemorate The Queen’s 70 years of service and invite visitors into Wimbledon Town Centre to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee, the installation centres around five quintessentially British concepts.

Featuring designs based on a corgi, a portrait of The Queen, a crown, a teacup, and an environmentally inspired design that was driven by the community, five large silhouettes on repurposed plinths (from a previous project by Love Wimbledon) have been unveiled across the town at Wimbledon Hill Road, Wimbledon Station, New Wimbledon Theatre, Polka Theatre and The Piazza.

Love Wimbledon looked to local schoolchildren to create designs for the fifth plinth, representing what trees mean to them and to the planet. Hosting an art competition for under 16’s in Merton. The winning two images have been reinterpreted by an artist on the planet-shaped plinth on The Piazza.

The entire installation will be on display in Wimbledon Town Centre until Monday 5 September and will be supported by a large Union Jack bunting display, hanging from the canopy on The Piazza, in tribute to Britain’s longest-reigning Monarch.

Craig Hurring, Chief Executive of Love Wimbledon Business Improvement District commented, “The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee is an exciting opportunity for town centres to think of fun, innovative ways to bring more visitors in, drive sales and create a classic buzz that many of us miss about high streets. We have loved the active involvement from our brilliant Wimbledon community in creating an installation that represents our community spirit and marks this momentous occasion”.

Love Wimbledon worked with creative agency Visual Impact to bring the installation to life, sponsored by local businesses: A-Plan Insurance, Elys, Morr & Co, The Piazza and WSM.
