Dons Take On Red Devils In Carling Cup

First league game is against Bristol Rovers

Wimbledon must travel to Crawley Town to take on the Red Devils in a premlimary round for this year's Carling Cup.

Following the first round draw, the winners will then travel to Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace.

And Wimbledon will play relegated Bristol Rovers at home in the first match of the League Two season on Saturday August 6.

The Carling Cup competition features a preliminary round for the first year since 2002/3 as a result of the relegation of cup holders, Birmingham City.

Birmingham are seeded through to Round 3, as a result of their participation in the Europa League, so the competition format required one club less in the First Round draw.

In line with previous seasons, the Preliminary Round features the two clubs placed lowest in the domestic league system last season, namely Wimbledon and Crawley Town.

Following a draw to determine home advantage, Crawley will host the Dons on Friday July 29, kick-off 7.45 pm, for a place in the First Round of this season’s competition.

A Wimbledon spokesman said: "Obviously both clubs are disappointed – both would have preferred to play a club they had not played before, and the requirement to play the game by 30 July is disruptive to both clubs’ pre-season preparations."

If Wimbledon get through to the first round, it will be a return visit to Selhurst for many of their fans as the original club played there as a home venue prior to their controversial move to Milton Keynes and re-birth as MK Dons.
