Conservatives Win Control Of Merton

Results of yesterday's council election

The Conservatives won xx seats against the xx secured by Labour, to enable them to regain control of Merton Borough Council.

In the 2010 election, Labour had re-gained control from the Tories when they won 28 seats against the 27 secured by the Conservatives.

Labour were then able to run a minority council, with the backing of the three Merton Park Ward Independent Residents. Three Tory councillors subsequently joined UKIP and set up the 'Merton Coalition' group - which another former Conservative joined, while another Conservative became an Independent.

The Conservatives last ran the council in 2006-2010 when they had 30 seats, against Labour's 27 and three Merton Park Ward Independent Residents.

And the result of yesterday's election, which was declared at xam today (May 23), means the Conservatives are back in charge again.
