Woman Dies in Wimbledon House Fire

Fourteen people evacuated from their homes after blaze on Rotherwood Close

A woman has died after a fire broke out at her home in Rotherwood Close on Tuesday night (4 April).

London Fire Brigade says it received the first call about the incident a 10:58pm and dispatched eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters from New Malden, Wimbledon, Mitcham, Tooting to the scene.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued the woman, believed to be in her seventies, from the first floor of an end-of-terrace house but she was later pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman from a neighbouring home was treated by London Ambulance Service crews for smoke inhalation. Around 14 people were evacuated from surrounding properties as a precaution.

The ground and first floors of the house were destroyed by fire and half of the roof was also damaged.

The fire was under control by 12:23am the following morning.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and Metropolitan Police. The police say that are seeking to identify the woman’s next of kin.
