South Wimbledon and Merton Park Worst Hit By Latest Covid Wave

Health experts hope relatively high vaccination rates will protect area

Local vaccination effort focused on younger generations

The latest figures show that much of the SW19 postcode area has infection rates around or below the average for London at the moment although there are clusters of cases within the locality.

The data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) which includes the number of cases of Covid-19 for the week to 14 July reveals that the area designated as South Wimbledon saw infections more than double to 38 giving it an infection rate per 100,000 of 417.1.

This is exceeded only by the Merton Park area locally which has an infection rate of 478.2.

Much of the rest of Wimbledon is not seeing the kind of exponential growth rates in positive tests that are currently being experienced across the country and in London as the Delta variant takes hold. Wimbledon Hill actually saw the number of infections fall in the most recent week.

Local areas generally have higher vaccination rates than the London average which is 65% for the first dose and 45% for the second dose but the national average is currently 88% for the first dose.

A local health professional told us, “The vaccination levels in Wimbledon are pretty good by London standards. This should stand us in good stead for the further increase in cases that looks set to follow now ‘Freedom Day’ has arrived.

“As was confirmed this week even people who have been double jabbed and have already had Covid can catch the virus but the evidence continues to mount that you are more protected against the most acute form of the disease. Admissions to local hospitals are picking up although not to the extent seen at the beginning of the year but every Covid admission is another bed that can’t be used to clear the backlog of treatment the NHS has at the moment.”
