Anyone living with or beyond cancer invited to walk, jog or run
The Wimbledon 5KYW group
April 24, 2023
The Wimbledon group of 5K Your Way (5KYW) is having its regular Saturday meeting on the Common this Saturday (29 April).
Anyone who is living with or beyond cancer including families, friends and health care professionals is invited to take part either by walking, jogging, running, cheering or volunteering. All ages can take part with Wimbledon 5KYW and you don’t need to complete the full course.
It you would like to take part, make sure you have registered with parkrun HERE and either print your barcode or save it on your phone. If you are an old-hand, you may also have a wristband with your barcode on it too!
You are also asked to register on the 5KYW website. HERE is the link.
If at all possible, every parkrunner is encouraged to arrive by public transport or by bike/on foot. If this is impossible, there is parking by the Windmill but this fills up very quickly and you should try and get there early to secure a spot. The carpark tends to be full by 8.40am. There is a limited number of disabled spaces available to your right as you drive in.
If you are coming by public transport the 93 bus brings you closest to the Windmill Café. You should get off at the Parkside Hospital stop and then it's about a ten-minute walk to the meeting point near the Windmill Café. You'll be able to spot the group easily with their blue 5KYW tops and banner. There should be some time for a chat and a catch-up before joining the parkrun briefing at 9am.
The route runs through a beautiful part of Wimbledon Common. It is two circular laps so there is always the option of just doing 2.5k. The route is not paved, is uneven in places and runs through woodland and by a small pond. It is worth noting that in wet weather it can become very muddy and slippery, so trail shoes for running and walking boots for walking are very useful.
There will usually be a 5KYW Ambassador doing the parkrun too, but the group will also be there to meet you at the end of the course - so don't ever worry about how long you take. The parkrun Tailwalker will always remain at the back regardless of timings, and the timekeeper will be there for as long as needed. There is the option of a chat over some tea and cake in the Windmill Café after the event.
