Cannizaro Park, the Grade II* listed park in Wimbledon, will be able to fly a Green Flag after being award the right by the Keep Britain Tidy Trust

An international mark of quality, the Green Flag Award recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark across the UK and globally.

It is hoped that the award provide reassurance to future donors as the park begins an ambitious regeneration programme across the next five years. Following the award win, Cannizaro Park will now be inspected annually by judges, with this external input combining with the detailed plans created by Merton Council and The Friends of Cannizaro Park.

Catherine Nelson, Chair, Friends of Cannizaro Park (FoCP), said, “The high standards underpinning this significant award were certainly not achieved overnight. They’re the result of strong partnerships between Merton Council, the Friends of Cannizaro group, Park contractor idverde and our many supporters within the local community.

“Of course, the award’s bedrock is the hard work of our dedicated team of volunteers who give up their time to ensure that the park remains a jewel in Wimbledon’s crown, a haven for wildlife and an attraction for all its many visitors.”

Judging took place in June with the award officially confirmed by a visit from Councillor Natasha Irons of Merton Council. Cannizaro Park joins with other local parks such as Colliers Wood Recreation Ground, Abbey Recreation Ground, Dundonald Recreation Ground and South Park Gardens in holding Green Flag status.

Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd MBE said, “I would like to congratulate everyone involved on achieving a Green Flag Award.

All our winners provide vital green space for communities, bring people together and create opportunities to lead healthy lifestyles. The staff and volunteers do so much to ensure these precious parks and green spaces maintain the high standards of the Green Flag Award and everyone involved should feel extremely proud of their achievement.”

The Park also offers a programme of events for people of all ages, including guided walks, art exhibitions and forest bathing. To join the Friends of Cannizaro Park, volunteer or donate, visit www.cannizaropark.com
