Encouraging Start For Dons

Wimbledon 2 v Charlton 0

Wimbledon started their pre-season campaign on Saturday (July 10) with an encouraging display to record a 2-0 win over Charlton Athletic at Kingsmeadow.

Manager Terry Brown honoured his pledge to field two different sides in each half, and both contained a liberal sprinkling of trialists.

But despite this the Dons were never unduly troubled by their more illustrious opponents, and the closest the Addicks came to scoring in front of the 1,417 crowd was when striker Gunnar Thorvaldsson’s poorly placed shot was blocked on the line by Brett Johnson with 'keeper Jack Turner beaten.

Luke Moore had an effort ruled out for offside before trialist Javonne Molloy put the Dons ahead in the second half. The former QPR man made space for himself to fire home from close range after Ismail Yakubu’s initial effort had been saved by visiting keeper Rob Elliot.

Summer signing Lee Minshull came close to adding the second moments later, his effort grazing the top of the bar. But it was the ex-Tonbridge Angels man who did get on the score sheet in the dying minutes, manoeuvring onto the end of the impressive Andre Blackman’s driven cross to tap home.

The Dons’ itinerary continues with a visit to Maidenhead United on Tuesday (July 13) before they host Millwall at Kingsmeadow on Friday evening (July 16, 7.45pm kickoff).

Wimbledon (first half): Turner; Jackson, Franks, Johnson, Noone; Hun Kim, Gregory, Yussuff; L Moore; Kedwell, Main.
Wimbledon (second half): Brown; Hatton, Yakubu, Harris, Blackman (Noone 89); Molloy, S Moore, Minshull, Jones, Jolley; Nwokeji (Martin 67).
