Merton Tory Leader Resigns From Post

Replaced by Debbie Shears, the first female leader of a major group on the council

David Williams, the Tory leader of Merton Borough Council until last week’s election saw Labour re-take charge, has resigned from his position as leader of the Conservative group. 

Councillor Shears was unanimously elected as leader of the Conservative group at the group’s first meeting after the council election results were declared, with Labour winning 28 seats against the 27 Tory victories.

Councillor Henry Nelless was also unanimously elected as Deputy Leader of the Conservative Group at last night’s meeting.

Councillor Shears said, "It is a huge honour to have been chosen by my colleagues as the new Leader of the Conservative Group. I intend to approach this position with the same energy and dedication as my predecessor, Cllr David Williams. I pay tribute to him today and also to Deputy Leader - Cllr Samantha George - for all their hard work in leading this Council over the last 4 years.”
