Record £1million Prize Money For Wimbledon Champions

Men and women play to win biggest purse in tournament's history

The champions of this year's Wimbledon tennis tournament will take home £1million in prize money, the All England Club have announced.

Both the men's and women's champions will win the biggest purse in the tournament's history, which is a 17.6% increase of £150,000 on 2009.

The total prize money for the event, which runs from June 21-July 4, will be £13.725million, up by £1.175million on last year.

Tim Phillips, chairman of the All England Club, said: "Wimbledon exists in a highly-competitive global marketplace, and it's the world's best players who create and drive the interest.

"It's important that we offer a level of prize money which is both appropriate to the prestige of the event and which gives the players full and fair reward."

The All England Club have also banned World Cup football from this year's championship by refusing to show matches on the big screen or other public areas.

Mr Phillips said: "This is arguably the leading tennis tournament in the world and people come here to watch tennis. If people want to watch the World Cup they should go to South Africa or watch it on the TV."
