Alice Walker will be in town for screening of the film adaptation of her book
Acclaimed American author, Alice Walker, will be in Wimbledon later this month for a screening of the film adaptation of her book, The Color Purple.
Walker, who won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel, which focus on the struggles of a young black woman, will be guest of honour at the Wimbledon Odeon when the film is shown at 6.30pm on Thursday April 29.
The screening will be followed by a question and answer session, hosted by American playwright and critic, Bonnie Greer.
The evening is part of the Happy Soul Festival, which aims to showcase new films, arts and live music as well as explore the well being of London’s black and Asian communities.
It’s the fourth festival organised by the South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust and it features events across Merton as well as five other London boroughs from April 20-30.
Wimbledon Odeon will also be hosting the Young People’s Short Film Awards as part of the festival on Tuesday April 27. The films, made by community groups in Merton and Wandsworth, have been judged by industry professionals and the winning film will be broadcast on the Community Channel.
All festival screenings and events are free, but tickets must be booked in advance by calling 0208 682 5977.
