92% of vehicles driving into zone compliant with new standards
A £12.50 charge is now payable by non-compliant vehicles entering the zone
A report on the first month's operation of the ULEZ in London shows that it has reduced the number of older vehicles being driven in London.
On an average weekday since the charge came into effect there were 47,000 fewer vehicles which did not meet the standard within the North and South Circulars compared to the period immediately before. This represents a reduction of 37%
Around 92 per cent of vehicles in the zone meeting the standards on an average day.
There were also 11,000 fewer vehicles driving in the zone at all on weekdays.
Much of the growth in compliance took place as Londoners prepared for the scheme introduction, with pre-compliance already at very high levels immediately prior to launch.
As a result of these changes, TfL estimates there will be a five per cent reduction in CO2 emissions from cars and vans in the newly expanded zone in its first year.
Some opponents of the charge have criticised it on the basis that targeting of older vehicles means that it is paid disproportionately by people on lower incomes who are unable to afford a replacement vehicle.

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.
