More than 550 patients suffering from coronavirus have successfully recovered at St George’s Hospital in Tooting and are now back home with their loved ones.

St George’s Hospital confirmed on Friday (April 24) that 559 Covid-19 patients had been discharged from the hospital.
The number is now thought to be even higher.

The news came as the hospital urged people experiencing serious illness such as suspected heart attacks or strokes to seek urgent medical care as normal.

Likewise, the hospital is continuing to perform ultrasound scans for pregnant women every day.

Figures obtained by the Evening Standard from 10 of the capital’s 17 acute trusts show that at least 5,443 patients with confirmed or suspected Covid-19 had been discharged by last Thursday (April 23).
Nevertheless, as of Sunday, April 26, 238 people had sadly died from the virus at St George’s Hospital according to NHS England statistics.

The hospital has not yet released information about how many patients are currently being treated, but as a major teaching hospital, St George’s has been at the forefront of the pandemic from the very beginning.

This weekend it was announced more than 20,000 people have died in hospitals across the UK after testing positive for the virus.

The real figure is thought to be much higher, as care home and community deaths are not included.

A statement on St George’s website reads: “Our thoughts are with the families of the patients affected – and, in all cases, we would ask that their privacy is respected at this time.”

As of Sunday (April 26) there have been 889 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Wandsworth. This is about average for a London borough. Currently Croydon and Brent have the largest number of confirmed cases, with 1,310 each. However, the real number is thought to be much higher.
