Heritage Showcase event for Merton
The local history of Merton will be bought to life at a special event in the borough on Friday (20 May).
The event at Morden Baptist Church in Crown Lane is a chance for local heritage enthusiasts, researchers or for anyone interested in local history to learn about Merton's past.
Merton has many claims to fame. Once home to Lord Nelson, the borough can also boast a Medieval Priory shortlisted for World Heritage Status, reportedly the oldest cricket green in the world in Mitcham, industrial links to Liberty and William Morris, and the renowned All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon.
There are many local services and organisations dedicated to preserving the prominent history of the borough, many of which will be at the Merton Heritage Showcase event to allow residents to discover more about their work.
A series of talks will take place throughout the afternoon, which will also reveal more about the borough's past. From 12pm-4pm there will also be stalls and displays from organisations including Merton Heritage Centre, Wimbledon Museum, Merton Conservation Service, Heritage Lottery Fund and Cricket Green School.
Cabinet member for community and culture, Councillor Martin Whelton, said: "Merton has a rich heritage and this showcase is a great way for residents of all ages to learn more about the history of Merton. In this borough we are proud of our past and work hard to ensure that it is remembered, and to protect our heritage."
