Letter To The Editor: "By-Election Is Common Sense"

A letter from Merton Green Party

Dear Editor,

On the 8th June 2013, we, the Merton Green Party set up a stall outside Wimbledon Library to start collecting signatures from Merton residents for our petition, calling for Councillor Evans and Councillor Hilton to stand down, and pave way for a by-election.

We do not feel that the councillors have a democratic mandate to represent their wards as UKIP councillors, when they were not elected as UKIP candidates. In Hillside, Councillor Evans’ ward, the UKIP candidate in 2010 came 11th out of 11, with only 139 votes. Now the former Conservative councillor is a UKIP councillor. How is that democratic?

We received a good response from residents. One lady said to us “Of course we should have a by-election. It’s just common sense, isn’t it?” We will be returning with our stall on the 22nd June 2013 to collect further signatures outside Wimbledon Library again. Once we have collected a substantial number of signatures, we will present our petition to the two councillors.

We also have set up an e-petition: http://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/let-democracy-decide.

It is not the right of an individual to decide what party represents their constituents, but the decision of the constituents. Let democracy decide.

Yours Sincerely

Dominik Leeson
