An eight-year-old girl believed to be a pupil at The Study Prep School has died after a car crashed into the school.

A woman driving a Land Rover ploughed through a fence and collided with a school building on Camp Road shortly before 10am this Thursday (6 July).

As well as fire engines and fifteen ambulances, a helicopter from London’s Air Ambulance attended. The girl was pronounced dead at the scene and 16 people were treated by paramedics, ten of whom have been taken to hospital.

Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond, whose daughter previously attended the school, told the PA news agency that several of those hurt were “critically injured”.

He said, “There are a number of people who are critically injured, as I understand it, and given the scale of the response from emergency services… this is a very serious incident.”

The driver, who is in her forties, stopped at the scene and has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The incident is not being treated as being an act of terrorism.

Detective Chief Superintendent Clair Kelland, local police commander for south west London, said, “This is tragic news and our thoughts are with the girl’s family and friends, and everyone affected today.

“We remain at the scene and are continuing our investigation into the full circumstances of the incident.”

The school is not currently responding to requests for comment.
