Dons Clean Up Against Bath
Wimbledon 4 Bath City 0
Wimbledon cruised to a comfortable 4-0 win against Bath City on Saturday (11 September) to maintain their lead at the top of the Conference table.
The Dons were again in rampant form and could realistically have beaten last season’s Conference South play-off winners by an even wider margin.
As it was, they had strikes from Sammy Moore, Ismail Yakubu, Christian Jolley and Danny Kedwell to thank for a win that left manager Terry Brown purring.
“The first half was probably the best we have played all season,” he told the club’s official website afterwards. “The four-nil result did not flatter us and I was particularly pleased that two goals were scored from set pieces, which is a benefit from being full-time and having the opportunity to practise.”
Except for a brief spell at the start of the second-half, the Dons dominated from start to finish against a Bath side that never lost its determination to try and play their own passing game.
They went behind just shy of the 20 minute mark when Ryan Jackson’s long throw found its way through to Steve Gregory. Although his effort was blocked by ex-Dons man Danny Webb, the rebound fell to Sammy Moore to calmly slotted home.
And the lead was extended in the 35th minute when Yakubu rose at the near post to power home a header from Sam Hatton’s corner.
The scoring was wrapped up with two goals in three second- half minutes, with Kedwell involved in both. First he flicked on another Jackson long throw to Christian Jolley, who twisted his body to sidefoot a volley past the visiting goalkeeper.
And then moments later he was fortunately placed when Jackson’s long-range effort spun wildly and fell at his feet, leaving him with a simple conversion for his eighth goal in as many games.
The Dons now face two tough games, both of which are being shown live on Premier Sports TV. This Friday (17 September) they travel to Luton Town, before hosting big-spending Crawley own, who currently sit just two points behind the Dons in second place, on Thursday 23 September.
• Dons goalkeeper Seb Brown has been called up for the England C squad to face Wales this coming Tuesday (14 September). He was originally named on standby but not joins fellow Dons Steve Gregory and Sam Hatton in the 16-man party.
