|Wimbledon In Line For Transport Awards|
Projects nominated in six categories
Wimbledon has been shortlisted for six London Transport Awards after improvement works in the town centre and South Wimbledon.
Merton Council has been shortlisted in the categories - the highest number of any London council - for an awards ceremony which takes place on March 21
The council says the town centre is now more open, with wider pavements, brand new seating and clear signage. Other additions include better lighting as well as new cycle lanes and cycle stands.
And the refurbished Wimbledon Station forecourt (right) has put Wimbledon mainline station in line for the Rail Station of the Year award.
Improvements to the South Wimbledon Business Area have also been shortlisted. These include better quality footpaths, landscaped public open space and new loading bays for the businesses.
Merton Council cabinet member for environmental sustainability and regeneration Councillor Andrew Judge said: "Being short listed for so many awards is testament to the dedication of the council and its partners Transport for London and FM Conway, Network Rail and South West Trains. We have all worked together to create a new and more attractive Wimbledon. In short, we have made Wimbledon a destination to be proud of."
Chief Operating Officer of the council’s contractor, FM Conway, Andrew Hansen, said: "We’re delighted to have been shortlisted for these awards. Delivering this flagship project alongside Merton Council has allowed us to showcase our expertise in urban regeneration schemes and the completed works are a great partnership achievement."
