|Have A Go At Morris Dancing|
Join in an English tradition
The Wimbledon-based Greensleeves Morris Men are running special "taster" sessions for anyone interested in having a go at morris dancing.
Greensleeves, founded in 1926 and based in Wimbledon since 1980, perform at various venues throughout the summer, including local pubs.
And on Boxing Day they perform the traditional Wimbledon mummers play in Wimbledon Village and then on Wimbledon Common.
Their core repertoire is based on the dances of the villages of Fieldtown in Oxfordshire and Sherborne in Gloucestershire. They also dance dances from other villages in the Cotswolds, the Welsh borders and Lichfield in Staffordshire.
They dance to pipe and tabor, melodeon, piano accordion, concertina and violin. They are often accompanied by an animal called Hengist and by one of number of fools.
Greensleeves practise from 8pm-10pm on Friday evenings between September and May.
The "taster" sessions for anyone interested in dancing or joining them as an instrumentalist, start on Friday September 2 at 8pm, and run throughout the month. They meet in the annexe at South Wimbledon Community Centre in Haydons Road.
