Councillor's quest to raise charity funds
Merton Mayor Councillor Gilli Lewis-Lavender is looking forward to one of Merton's councillors cycling to the foothills of the Himalayas to raise money for her official charity next month.
March will see Councillor Jeff Hanna cycle from India's capital New Delhi, to Nepal's capital, Kathmandu.
The Mayor said: "I'm very pleased to see Councillor Hanna take up this challenge after he and Councillor Gam Gurung, who was born in Nepal, came up with this great idea.
"Parkinson's is a very distressing condition, both for sufferers and for their families, and one person in 500 has it. Our local branch of Parkinson's UK does a wonderful job supporting our residents affected by it - they deserve all the support we can give them. I know everyone in our borough is behind him on this great cause."
Councillor Hanna said: "My last cycle trip was two years ago in Jordan. This will be more challenging, but I still plan to detour to see the Taj Mahal.
"I enjoy cycle touring, as you see much more of how people really live, compared to travelling with arranged tours. My bottom line is to make sure I get back in time for the council meeting at the end of March!"
