|Call For Eyesore Bridge To Be Cleaned|
Local campaigners want graffiti removed
Campaigners are putting pressure on Network Rail to clean the graffiti off the Wimbledon Chase rail bridge.
Network Rail has said it will cost an estimated £100,000 to repaint the eyesore bridge, which crosses Kingston Road, and they only have money for essential maintenance work.
Network Rail had last year told Theresa Villiers, who was then Transport Minister, that the estimate for re-painting the bridge was so high because the work couldn't go ahead without closing road and rail networks.
But local Liberal Democrats say the worst areas of graffiti at the bridge are over the pavements and these could probably be cleaned for less, without an entire bridge re-paint.
Lib-Dem London Assembly member Caroline Pidgeon put pressure on Mayor Boris Johnson to ask Network Rail to improve the bridge. But he has said Network Rail must be approached.
