Wimbledon left it until injury time before scoring the goals that deservedly clinched victory against Histon on Tuesday (August 17).

The visitors’ resolute defending seemed set to deny the Dons a victory until Danny Kedwell and Ricky Wellard popped up in the dying moments to finally made the breakthrough.

Much of the credit for the Dons’ initial failure to score must go to Histon goalkeeper Joe Welch who produced save after save during the first half, with two from Wellard and Ismail Yakubu efforts particularly noteworthy.

Steve Gregory, Kedwell and Jon Main all went close, too, as the Dons produced a scintillating first-half display of passing football.

Although the Dons kept on the pressure during the second-half, their performance started to become slightly ragged as it increasingly looked as if Histon’s game plan to frustrate the home side would reap rewards.

But the visitors’ plans started to unravel when former Don Femi Ilesanmi received a booking for time wasting – a fate that could easily have befallen some of his team mates, too – and was promptly shown the red as he had already been booked for a first-half foul.

And the Dons finally achieved the breakthrough in time added on partially to compensate for Histon’s timewasting tactics.

First Kedwell went down under a challenge in the box before getting up to slot home the penalty himself.

And moments later substitute Rashid Yussuff played in Kedwell. His cross from the right was met by Wellard who stabbed home to give the scoreline a justified but at one time unlikely complexion.

The Dons host Tamworth on Saturday (August 21) looking to keep up with Luton Town as the Conference’s only two teams with 100 per cent records.
